Abbas Kiarostami is a contemporary Iranian filmmaker I had never heard of until I saw his photographs on my most recent trip to P.S.1. He is now the subject of an exhibition and retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art.
This MOMA retrospective looks interesting. I think you would like his movie "Crimson Gold" from a few years ago - it's a sad & beautiful story and also gives a really interesting street-level view of modern day Tehran that you almost never see.

Oops, I see that Kiarostami gets the writing credit for this movie, the director was Jafar Panahi. Still think you'd like it!
