Thanks for the pointer to this ... I haven't seen this one, and it looks right up my alley. I love a dark Swedish morality tale, and not just because I grew up in one!

Ang Lee introduced the version I saw, and credited the film with shaping his approach to filmmaking. He also said something to the effect that Scandinavian dramatists, given the cold and desolation of the north, have been responsible for strikingly pure and complex explorations of spirituality.
